Green, Sustainable Mining Solutions

Crypto mining is often criticized as a particularly energy-hungry and polluting activity. Yet solutions for greener mining do exist. At Startmining, sustainability has always been part of our DNA. Like many of you, we care about the environment and are committed to protecting our planet. So it was only natural that we opted for eco-friendly, sustainable mining solutions.

What does that mean in practice?

We chose to set up our mining farms in Northern Europe, in countries where it is cold all year round and where renewable energy is abundant.

Why is the cold useful?

Because it naturally cools the machines used to mine.

How is the cold used?

It is captured, then filtered through G4 filter pockets before cooling the machines along a corridor. This natural cooling technique is called « free-cooling. »

Why is free-cooling eco-friendly?

Because it avoids air-conditioning cooling, which is not only energy-hungry but also produces refrigerant fluids responsible for greenhouse gases that pollute soil and air.

It is no secret that mining machines require a lot of energy to run. Some mining companies still use fossil fuels to power their farms with electricity. Yet we know today that these energy sources are finite and polluting. At Startmining, we chose green energy to power our mining farms.

What renewable energy sources are these?

Geothermal and hydroelectric power. Nature is wonderfully rich: it is volcanoes and rain that keep our mining farms running around the clock.

Worth noting: mining is indeed energy-intensive, but it is worth remembering that digital activities such as data storage are far more so. It is up to each of us to think about good digital practices to reduce our carbon footprint over the long term.
